Fulham House

A Victorian London home with a contemporary spirit

Overlooking a leafy park beside the River Thames, this handsome Victorian townhouse was undergoing an extensive renovation by EMR Architecture when its owners approached Pringle & Pringle. Having discovered our work through a feature in Homes & Gardens, they wanted interiors that felt contemporary yet comfortable, reflecting their personalities and the busy lives of their three children.

The clients brought contrasting tastes to the project. One loved richly layered interiors, full of colour and pattern, while the other favoured a more restrained aesthetic with an appreciation for space and simplicity. Finding a balance between these perspectives became central to the design.

A family of avid readers, their extraordinary book collection is woven throughout the architecture, with beautifully considered joinery providing character to both living spaces and hallways. In the library, a neutral backdrop allows an eclectic mix of contemporary furniture, patterned textiles and sculptural pieces to bring warmth and individuality.

Elsewhere, we embraced colour more confidently. A blue pantry provides an unexpected contrast to the understated kitchen, while richly textured wallpapers and playful upholstery bring personality to the basement media room and two individual studies. A particular favourite is her study, where a curtained daybed creates a wonderfully cocooning retreat.

The basement guest bedroom, painted in Paint & Paper Library's Very Well Red, was initially a leap of faith for the clients but has become one of their favourite decisions, transforming what could have been a cold space into somewhere warm and inviting.

The result is a home that balances contemporary elegance with decorative detail, reflecting the personalities of its owners rather than following a prescribed aesthetic. With artwork curated by Cramer & Bell, the final layer brings further individuality to this characterful London family home.
