A Hampshire House

An unfolding story

There is something wonderfully theatrical about this rambling Hampshire house. Almost cinematic in its setting, with wisteria tumbling across the façade, soaring ceilings, enormous shuttered windows and rolling gardens overlooking an extraordinary collection of trees. Planted by a previous owner who sourced tree seeds for RHS Wisley, the gardens have a story all of their own.

Inside, the house is equally full of character. A former owner was an enthusiastic collector and keen DIYer, leaving behind an intriguing mix of creative experiments, unexpected details and architectural quirks. Some more successful than others, but all contributing to the sense that this was a house that had been truly loved.

Our clients, a renewable energy entrepreneur and a television producer and writer, fell for its charm and saw the opportunity to create something entirely their own. Their individual tastes bring an interesting dynamic to the design process. One is drawn to a more polished, considered and minimalist aesthetic, although increasingly embracing colour, while the other has a love of the unexpected, playful details and richly layered interiors.

Our challenge is to bring these contrasting sensibilities together, creating a home that feels cohesive without losing the individuality, humour and character that make it so special.

We are currently working through the transformation, carefully balancing the house's theatrical heritage with a fresh new chapter. There is much more of this story to tell, and we look forward to sharing it as the project unfolds.
